Outreach activity - Harrodian School

March 14, 2024

The QUIIN lab held an outreach activity at the Harrodian School in West London. Lab members introduced students to echo location, "seeing" with sound using a Butterfly probe and a tablet, and finally, making bubbles dance to pop music!

More information can be found here.

Anglo-French Physical Acoustics Conference 2024

January 17-19, 2024

Paul and Rachel attended and spoke at the AFPAC 2024 conference organized by the Institute of Physics. The conference covered a wide range of physical acoustics topics such as material characterization, biomedical ultrasound, and imaging.

Rachel spoke about her work in 'Evaluating the physical limits of acoustic holograms for transcranial brain applications'.

Paul gave a talk titled 'Coherent Multi-Transducer Ultrasound (CoMTUS) imaging: Towards large field-of-view imaging with three probes'.

Girls in Engineering event

November 2023

In November, Rachel visited the Boeing flight services site to volunteer at a Girls in Engineering STEM event. 3 schools took part in the event and the girls were split into groups of 5 to compete in 3 different engineering challenges. Rachel gave a talk to the year 8 girls about her path through engineering as a woman and discussed her current work with acoustic holograms.

The event was a great success! The girls were excited to try all the activities and came away with a better understanding of the broad range of STEM subjects available.

New Scientist Live

October 7-9, 2023

The QUIIN lab were pleased to have the opportunity to host demonstrations of their research at this year's New Scientist Live, held at the ExCel Arena in London. Across three days attendees were able to get to grips with ultrasound imaging, performing hopefully the first of many ultrasound scans and to see up-close the effect sound can have on bubbles.

The lab had a great time at the event and hopefully inspired the next generation of ultrasound experts!

IUS 2023

September 3 - 8, 2023

The lab travelled to Montreal for the annual IEEE Interal Ultrasonics Symposium in September. Our presentations and posters included:

  • Micro-Vasculature Phantom for Ultrasound Super-Resolution Imaging

  • Multi-Modal Confirmation of Thermosensitive Liposome Delivery to the Brain After FUS-Induced Blood-Brain Barrier Opening for the Treatment of Diffuse Midline Glioma

  • Measuring MRI Signal of Gd-Labelled Anbodies and Liposomes for Confirming UltrasoundMediated Delivery Into the Brain

The 2023 Artimino Conference on Medical Ultrasound Technology

June 2023

In June 2023 Jaime and Paul attended the Artimino Conference on Medical Ultrasound Technology in Tuscany, Italy. Paul presented his work on three-probe ultrasound imaging, and the conference featured many other interesting talks.

The conference was also a great opportunity to catch up with our collaborators and hosts from the MSE Lab in Florence.

Winter School on Therapeutic Ultrasound 2023

March 2023

In March 2023 Amelia and Rachel attended a one week course in Les Houches, France, on Therapeutic Ultrasound, hosted by Ecole de Physiques des Houches.

Lectures and Presentations included:

  • Focusing Ultrasound in complex media: the role of Time Reversal Mirrors, by Jean-Francois Aubry

  • Histology for therapeutic ultrasound, by Gail ter Haar

  • Histotripsy, by Vera Khokhlova

  • and many more interesting talks

The school was also a great opportunity to meet other PhD students and learn about the amazing work they are doing.

Superheroes unlimited

August 20, 2022

Kirsten and Antonis had fun discussing ultrasound and scanning buckets with sponges, together with enthusiastic young scientists! In an event full of hands-on activities and superheroes, more than 30 children did their first ultrasound scan - but not the last!

Stay tuned for more outreach activities from our group!
